FIBC Safety Guidelines

FIBC safety should always hold highest priority. Whether you have brand new FIBCs or used FIBCs, to ensure their longevity you need to store them well in proper condition right until the time you fill them in with a product. There are a few guidelines to help you keep your FIBCs safe and sound.

Safety of FIBCs

A few points you need to keep in mind for FIBC safety consist of these:

Water or Moisture Contamination:

Empty FIBCs (whether used or new) need to be stored in a safe and clean facility or warehouse. This will help to protect the FIBCs from moisture or water contamination as water or moisture can meddle with FIBC safety by causing damage to them.

UV Rays and Sunlight Degradation:

Storage of FIBCs need to take place in an area that is free from direct sunlight as prolonged exposure to the sun will cause UV radiations to harm the FIBCs by slowly weakening the strength of the bags.

Inclement Weather:

You need to safeguard your FIBCs from inclement weather that includes rain and snow as exposing your FIBCs to such weather conditions can weaken the bags and so you will not be able to utilize them for storing a product.

Outdoor Storage is not Advisable:

After consulting with a manufacturer or supplier, you need to opt for an FIBC that is suitable for the job. Make sure FIBC safety is taken care of by confirming that the bags are covered properly. However, it is best that you not store the FIBCs outside in order to prevent them from getting exposed to dirt, moisture, dust, sunlight and extreme weather conditions.

Storage of Empty FIBCs

Storage of empty FIBCs should be carried out in an effective manner, even if they are brand new or used bags. You should see that they are well maintained so that you are able to fill them with a product without any problem.

The shelf life of any FIBC is not a well known fact as there are no test reports, studies or data that can determine its exact shelf life. So whatever declarations are made by a company with regards to the FIBCs shelf life, is the company’s responsibility alone as the Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container Association does not make any statement with regards to the longevity of the FIBC.

Shelf-life of FIBCs are subject to the nature of their construction, exposure to environmental hazards, handling and storage methods, the UV inhibitor used as well as the contents stored in them. This is why determining the shelf life of a bulk bag becomes tedious.

To ensure FIBC safety and to make certain that it lasts for a long time period, you need to conduct periodic performance testing on samples while at the same time compare these results to the results obtained from the samples that are newly manufactured. Samples need to meet the required standards that are set in ISO 21898 so that they can be used to their optimum capacity.
